Our Process
“As a part of OPOC it has been satisfying to work together with our attorney colleagues to help those who are most vulnerable in the criminal legal system. Physicians can meaningfully impact a case with their expertise, which is a true testament to the privilege we hold as medical professionals. We should feel empowered to help.”
— Sunny Kung, physician specializing in addiction medicine and internal medicine

Learn about Our Process
-
With the client’s consent, an attorney completes the Affidavit Request Form, outlining the client's medical needs and the relevant questions for the affidavit.
-
OPOC leadership works to pair a clinician with relevant medical experience and expertise with the attorney requesting the affidavit.
-
Clinicians review medical records and draft an affidavit. Clinicians complete the medical affidavit by the agreed-upon deadline.
-
Attorney makes use of the affidavit in the legal case. With their client’s consent, the attorney may present the affidavit to relevant stakeholders in the legal system for consideration during decision-making in the client’s criminal case. On occasion, clinicians will be asked to testify in court.
